Carol's Catch-Up

Into winter we go

The first day of winter - brrrrrr. They say that we are in for a wetter but warmer winter in Victoria but I will believe all that when I see it, or we get to September and see if they were right. I am sure that when I am looking out the window and it is freezing cold and hailing I will be thinking, “They got that wrong again.” I really don’t envy those weather forecasters!
In May we had another wonderful opportunity to meet more older adults and hear their stories. Third Age Fitness were invited to attend two Mingles events for Carers Victoria that bring together carers from all over Victoria to enjoy morning tea, lunch and a little entertainment. This year the entertainment was a wonderful Elvis Presley impersonator who had the crowds on their feet dancing, singing along, and sometimes squealing when he came over to their table! The joy on their faces was a delight to see and it was great to be a part of it, and we were able to give people an opportunity to purchase DVDs so they could keep exercising at home while they were caring for someone.

A lady I spoke to shared that she hadn’t been able to attend an event like this one for over five years because she was a full time carer for her husband - this brought everything into perspective as to how fortunate I am with my family and health. We spoke to many carers and encouraged them to try and fit some exercise into their lives and the lives of those who they are caring for, but we know it’s hard with so many competing priorities.

May saw my family have three birthdays in four days, plus Mother’s Day in there too, so we caught up quite a bit and had plenty of good food and chatter - although did have a few last minute changes with COVID exposures and isolations affecting a few of them! We only have one family birthday in June - phew! - and that will be a special one.

My husband and I had a wonderful three day weekend away with friends at Lakes Entrance recently, and on the way down we stopped at a national park and did a lovely walk for just over an hour. Saturday morning was a stroll along the main street (and a coffee of course!) and a squiz in the shops. In the late afternoon we walked across the causeway and onto the ocean side where we enjoyed the lovely beach - we were surprised by how scarce it was with not many other people out walking. It was pretty windy though! We walked to the entrance for the boats and then back again which was a two hour walk, so by then we were ready for our pub dinner of seafood - what else would you have down there? It was great to be back out and travelling around the state - I appreciate it much more now after so long in lockdown.

As it gets harder and harder to get out of the house to go for a walk, put on one of our YouTube videos or sign in to your membership and get stuck into a workout with us - before you know it you’ll have done your exercise and be ready and motivated to take on the rest of the day.

Till next month……
