Carol's Catch-Up: November 2024
It's been a big few months!
Wow! I can’t believe how much has happened since I shared with you last - the AFL Grand Final, a trip to the Flinders Ranges, and … my first hip replacement! It's been a time of firsts, and victories, and challenges, but I'm growing and learning along the way.
Firstly, the AFL Grand Final. The game was a bit of a fizzer but I was pleased the Brisbane Lions took home the trophy. Our family tipping competition that followed was a little more exciting with most of us hanging in until three quarter time, but then it became a one-horse race.
Trudi scored an outstanding 152 points (equal best in Australia, according to ESPN who have 880,000 tipsters!) which was 15 tips ahead of me, and then the others straggled over the line behind that. We always have fun at our family gatherings, regardless of who is in front, with lots of laughter as the winners are called out and the scores from each round are tallied - the different responses from my grandchildren are always entertaining!

Secondly, I have been on an adventure to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, and it was absolutely stunning. To see that part of the world was fantastic and I can’t believe that I haven’t been there before.
The countryside was a lot greener than I imagined, and the red dust was even more vibrant than I remember from other trips I have done in Australia.
Using our new camping van went very well and I was very fortunate to experience four-wheel driving for the first time. The ups and downs of the road were very steep in parts, and these stretches were challenging for me to navigate, but I think I might have graduated from the Learner’s Permit to the probationary period, so to speak!
It was such fun learning this new skill and very exhilarating when driving - I could get hooked on it, if I am not careful!

Thirdly, I have had my first hip replacement done recently and I am currently going through the challenges of rehabilitation. Fortunately, I only had a couple of days in hospital before I could come home to my in-house carer - my husband - for all the assistance I needed.
My exercise routine is quite intense and I am very committed to my rehabilitation program, as you can imagine. Consequently, I am having trouble keeping up with other things! And if the occasional visitor pops in, I have to be careful not to get frustrated by the change in my routine, as I really have enjoyed my friends and family coming to visit.
I have another three weeks to recover as much strength and mobility as I can before the other hip is done, and then I will have to do it all again. I am hoping that by Christmas I will be moving reasonably well, so by the end of summer I will be raring to go for another year of exercise classes!

Speaking of classes, I hope you’ve seen that we are now live on Zoom three times a week - on Tuesdays we have 9.30am Cardio Chair with Trudi and 1.30pm Mobility Balance with Bree. We also have Agility Strength on Wednesdays at 9.30am with Bree. We have casual passes, 10 class passes, and term passes available, so I’d love for you to come along and try one of these classes. Keep them in mind also when you start planning your fitness program in the new year, as these will be running again in Term 1. Find out more on our TAF/Live webpage.
If you are starting to think about Christmas presents for friends and neighbours, consider giving them the gift of health! You might purchase a DVD for them, or a 10 class pass, as well as one for yourself so you can exercise together. I am sure they will appreciate that you are thinking of their well-being. You can start browsing our range of DVDs on our online store.
