Carol's Catch-Up: May 2025

Lots of new adventures!

We’re already steaming ahead toward the halfway point of the year! The weather in Melbourne has stayed unusually warm, and with no significant rain yet, it’s hard to believe we’re this far into the calendar. My garden is really feeling the effects—sadly, I’ve already lost a couple of bushes that have been thriving for over 25 years, which has been quite disappointing.

Building our online community
This year has certainly kept me on my toes. It’s been wonderful to see more people joining our TAF/Live Zoom classes each week, and we’re really building a supportive online community. I always look forward to our chats after class as it’s an opportunity to get to know everyone better and to share both the successes and the challenges that come with getting older. Some participants live in remote areas, some are trying exercise for the first time, and others are familiar faces from my in-person classes who have since moved away to be closer to grandchildren. Technology really is a wonderful thing when it brings people together for such a positive purpose.

International presentations
Trudi and I have also been busy working with other fitness instructors. This year, we’ve presented at a conference and two webinars, connecting with instructors from all over—mainly Australia and New Zealand, but also as far away as Alaska, Singapore, New York and Africa. I always enjoy these opportunities to connect and learn from others, and it’s encouraging to hear that our courses and workshops are making a difference. I can now officially call myself an international presenter too!

I’m making my TV debut!
Next month brings something completely new for me: my TV debut! Carol O’Halloran from the Channel 31 show “Over 50? So What!” will be filming one of my Zoom workout classes on Friday. She’ll be interviewing some of our participants, as well as chatting with Trudi and myself. I’m relieved to know that if I get nervous or lose my train of thought, we can always do a “take two!” I’ll let you know when the episode will air.
Family milestones
On the family front, we’ve celebrated two milestones in recent months. One of my grandsons made his “debut” into society, and we had a wonderful evening dressing up and enjoying a fancy night out. The dance floor was right up my alley—I was up and dancing for over an hour before my feet finally gave out in my heels! I’ll admit, I was a little stiff the next morning, but nothing a walk couldn’t fix!

Another grandson, my daughter Kayte’s eldest, turned 18, and we marked the occasion with a lovely family dinner. He also passed his driving test last week, so he’s now officially on the road. Amazing. And he can now drive me places, if I ever need help in the future!
Carol's Catch Up for older adults and seniors - enjoying the sunshine
As the weather does cool down, make sure to keep moving throughout the day so the muscles don’t get too stiff. Roll the shoulders back, lift the knees up to the chest, and touch your toes at the end of each chapter, to boost your circulation while you are curled up with your book!
