Carol's Catch-Up: December 2023
A busy few months with a few firsts as we look towards Christmas
Ho hum, here we go again (or should I say ho ho?) - another year is approaching the end and we are starting to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas again. And yes, you guessed it, the decorations are all up on my roof again this year. After changing a few lights around this year due to new gutters and growing trees, it seems to have made the whole house look different. It was wonderful as always to light up the house on the 1st of December.
This year I am opening up my home again on Christmas Day, so we will be enjoying the company of family and friends. I always love the big gatherings. I know it is hard work with the preparation, and I appreciate all the help I am given, but the noise and excitement that happens on Christmas Day is something special and I am always grateful for it. I am going semi-traditional this year with my usual roast turkey and pork but we will have a mixture of roast vegies and salads to serve on the side. I can feel my mum turning in her grave though as I say that - she would never serve a salad on Christmas Day! It means we can prepare them ahead of time though, which means less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying each other's company on the day. Salads are nicer on the hot days too, although we will see what Melbourne does this year for the weather - anything could happen!
I am very excited that one of our “adopted” family members had a baby in August this year and I am going to get lots of cuddles from him - he is really cute. We will follow that up (lunch and the cuddles) with plum pudding and desserts. We haven’t finalised our sweets yet but I am sure everyone will go home absolutely stuffed.
Over the last few months my husband and I have been busy painting the outside of our house which has been both a chore and a challenge. On the positive side though, we had Colorbond guttering and fascias installed earlier this year which meant the painting was cut in half - don’t you love it when things like that happen? It also meant less ladder work for me, which some of you will be pleased to hear!
I had a bit of a setback with my knee in late September when I was diagnosed with a torn meniscus and this has continued to give me a lot of grief. Fortunately I can rehab it at home, so at this point no operation is necessary. I have my daily exercises which do take quite some time and it is slowly improving, but I must confess I am a very impatient patient. I am still able to instruct six of my nine classes each week (those ones where I don’t need to move around a lot in) so again that is a bonus, as otherwise I would be very grumpy! I am looking forward to returning to my full schedule hopefully in early February, but a big plus for me has been the extra time I’ve had to concentrate on Third Age Fitness which is growing and requiring more and more of my time. I am thoroughly enjoying the time to do this.

Speaking of the business, we had an exciting ‘first’ last week which you might have seen - on Friday Trudi and I made our radio debut on 96.5 InnerFM! We were a part of the 'Friday Oasis' and in between songs from Human Nature, the Beatles and Sting, we got to share with listeners health tips and ideas for incorporating exercise into the everyday. Trudi even got to present the weather forecast at the top of the hour! We would love to get out more into the community and are always looking for opportunities either face to face, via newsletters and websites, or now radio! If you have any contacts please pass them onto me via our Contact page.
Over the weekend I had another exciting event - I was invited to be a guest presenter with a colleague in London to speak to the developing fitness industry in Africa. I have started working with organisations in Africa and connecting with instructors to help train, educate and encourage them.

This is extremely rewarding work for Third Age Fitness as both Trudi and I are passionate about getting the word out across the world on how to help older adults live the best lives they can through exercise, and this often starts with passionate instructors.
