After walking for decades, Ruth needed something more

Ruth has been active all of her life, but felt she needed to add something different to her exercise regime. She started with our YouTube workouts, but was enjoying it so much she took out a membership to access the full range of workouts.

Tell us a bit about the stage of life you are in?
I’ve retired now from a career in teaching and chaplaincy, and I’m enjoying this new stage of life! My husband and I live in our own home and really enjoy working in our beautiful garden - we have a large block backing onto bushland. We take delight in our family, and have five gorgeous grandchildren, with three in Melbourne and two in Perth.

What kind of exercise do you do? What has exercise looked like for you over the years?
I’ve walked each day for many decades now - I have a walking circuit around my garden, and I enjoy the many trails near our home. When I was working I could walk home in the dark quite safely in the evening, so walking has always been a part of my life. When we go away for holidays in our caravan, long daily walks are one of our favourite activities - especially when we can do it along the beach. Our favourite ‘walking beach is at North Haven in New South Wales.

What was your main reason for taking out a membership?
I have been doing Pilates for nearly 10 years now, starting after suffering a back injury. As the years go by though, I find I need and want to do a broader range of physical activity, so discovering Third Age Fitness last year during COVID lockdown was fabulous. I was in my final year of a university course and took on extra study during the year as well. To help compensate for all that extra time sitting at my desk I would start each weekday with an online workout to get moving.

What activities fill your week at the moment?
I’ve finished with study for the time being, so I’m enjoying doing voluntary work at a local school, assisting with Breakfast Club, and also mentoring a child each week with the Kids Hope program. I work alongside my other half in his job working with seniors at our church, and I also care for my 97-year-old dad one day each week. Our garden also keeps me busy, and it is both great relaxation and good exercise - I have been known to forget about meals when I’m working in the garden as time can just fly!

What do you like about Third Age Fitness membership?
I started with the free YouTube videos but then I took out an online membership because I was enjoying the program so much, and also felt it would provide me both with support and a level of accountability. I certainly have experienced a higher level of fitness and energy since taking up the extra activity. I love being able to exercise at home and adapt the time I do the classes to my schedule.

Any last thoughts that you would like to share?
Congratulations to Carol, Kayte and Trudi, who prepare and present the classes so capably. I warmly recommend the program to other older adults for all it offers.
