Tell us a little about yourself
I have been retired from teaching now for seven years. Life is busy enough however, with family and community involvements. I play badminton twice a week, volunteer in two community groups, one with refugees and asylum seekers, the other in a community chat room at the Greensborough Plaza. I am part of a book club, so read avidly: and spend many hours sewing or doing craft of some sort. I am also part of a church community and make up part of the music team singing and playing guitar every now and then.

What are you looking forward to in life?
I love travelling, although that is now somewhat restricted. My husband and I manage to get away now and then (including the pictured trip hiking through the Pyrenees), and love the great outdoors with plenty of walking and exploring. We plan to travel more within Australia over the next few months and years.
How do you feel about ageing and getting older?
I am a great believer in not thinking too much about age and the restrictions that it brings. There is still so much I would like to do, and I want to be able to do as much as possible and push myself to be active as much as possible, for as long as possible. I play badminton with women in their 80’s and see the benefits of being active and want to be one of them in the future!
How long have you been exercising? What did ‘exercise’ look like when you were younger?
I have always been active and involved in sporting clubs over the years, playing netball and tennis so I can’t remember not playing something!
What does ‘exercise’ look like for you now?
In recent years I have made the effort to attend an exercise class once a week to add to the routine I already have. I try to walk at least twice a week as well. The exercise class challenges muscle groups that aren’t used even when playing a sport. I want to keep this going as I see the benefits in my overall fitness and health.
What do your family think of your exercise program?
My husband and children are very supportive of any exercise undertaken as they are all of the same thinking and play sport and exercise in varying capacities. Some are involved in the fitness industry as well. My friends have differing attitudes, but all of them understand the benefits of exercise, even though for some it’s only going for a walk. Some are still working part time or have health issues that hinder what they can commit to.
What do you like about Third Age Fitness membership?
The Third Age Fitness workouts were a great help over the lockdown period, and they are still a part of my regular routine now. Of course I miss meeting together with others to exercise, but the online classes are really well done and have something for everyone. I love the short warm ups and stretches as well as the more challenging core muscle and strength exercises - I know there is always something whatever mood I’m in.
Why should people take out a Third Age Fitness membership?
I love that I can now exercise at home. I have a workout station set up where I put the music on my boom box and just go for it! When it’s too hot or too cold outside, I can regulate the temperature inside and be more than comfortable, so I like being able to do that. It’s well worth taking out the membership to add to the diversity of options you have for keeping fit in body and mind. Well done to the team and keep up the great work.
